Adolescent Counseling
Teen Counseling & Mental Health Support for Children, Preteens, and Adolescents
Adolescence can be a difficult season to understand, especially when your child seems anxious, withdrawn, angry, overwhelmed, or no longer like themselves. Some changes may be part of growing up, but when emotional, behavioral, or social concerns begin affecting school, relationships, family life, or daily functioning, counseling can provide meaningful support.
Lifeline Behavioral Health provides adolescent counseling for children, preteens, teens, and families navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, school stress, emotional regulation, self-esteem, identity concerns, family conflict, and major life changes. Services include individual therapy, family support, DBT skills, play therapy, trauma-informed counseling, and flexible in-person, telehealth, or hybrid treatment options.

When Should Parents Consider Teen Counseling?
Some changes are part of growing up, but ongoing emotional, behavioral, or social struggles can be a sign that your teen needs more support. Teen counseling can help when stress, anxiety, mood changes, family conflict, or school challenges begin affecting daily life.
Parents and caregivers may consider adolescent counseling if a child or teen is experiencing:
- Ongoing sadness, irritability, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm
- Withdrawal from friends, family, hobbies, or school activities
- Changes in sleep, appetite, grades, or motivation
- Panic, excessive worry, anger, or mood swings
- Low self-esteem, identity concerns, or peer conflict
- Trauma symptoms, grief, bullying, or major life transitions
- Substance use, risky behavior, or unhealthy coping patterns
- Difficulty communicating with parents or family members
Compassionate Adolescent Therapy for Every Stage
Children and teens do not always have the words to explain what they are feeling. Adolescent therapy gives young people a safe space to build emotional awareness, coping skills, and healthier communication. We tailor counseling to each child’s age, personality, symptoms, and family needs. Treatment includes:
- Play therapy for younger children who express thoughts and feelings through creativity, imagination, and behavior
- DBT-based emotional regulation tools to help kids and teens manage intense feelings, reduce impulsive reactions, and respond with more confidence
- Cognitive behavioral approaches to help adolescents recognize unhelpful thought patterns and build healthier coping skills
- Affirming support for identity, self-esteem, peer relationships, and family concerns
- Family counseling and parenting support to strengthen communication, connection, and support at home
- In-person, telehealth, and hybrid sessions to make counseling more accessible when clinically appropriate

Adolescent Counseling Services and Levels of Care
Lifeline Behavioral Health offers teen counseling and adolescent mental health services at different levels of care, depending on each child’s needs, symptoms, and daily functioning.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Our adolescent IOP is designed for teens who need more support than weekly therapy but do not require inpatient hospitalization. IOP includes multiple therapeutic touchpoints each week while helping adolescents maintain home, school, and family routines.
Outpatient Counseling
Outpatient counseling provides ongoing support through weekly one-on-one therapy sessions, family support, and telehealth options. This level of care helps teens work through anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, emotional regulation, stress, peer concerns, and long-term mental health needs.

Structured Counseling for Adolescents
Growth & Recovery for Adolescents
GRASP (Growth & Recovery for Adolescents: Strategies and Programs) is the framework that guides adolescent care at Lifeline. Rather than a single treatment track, GRASP brings together individual counseling, group-based support, family involvement, and flexible levels of care to meet adolescents where they are.
Counseling services may be provided within this framework through outpatient care or an intensive outpatient program (IOP), allowing support to adapt as needs change and progress is made.

Adolescent & Youth Certificate Programs
Support Built Around Specific Needs
Certificate programs for adolescents and children are designed around specific areas of need and completed over a defined period of time. These programs provide therapeutic support while helping young people better understand emotions, behaviors, and challenges that affect daily life.
Certificate programs are part of ongoing care and may be used as a starting point or alongside continued counseling. Services are available in person, through telehealth, or in a hybrid format.

What Healing Looks Like for Teens & Families
At Lifeline, adolescent therapy isn’t just about symptom relief. It’s about helping children and adolescents grow into emotionally aware, self-assured individuals. Through tailored sessions and family collaboration, individuals learn how to regulate emotions, communicate effectively, and feel more in control of their lives.
They learn to manage anxiety and depression before patterns deepen, safely explore identity and personal values, and develop the tools to navigate peer relationships and family challenges with greater confidence. Adolescent counseling helps young people give voice to their thoughts and feelings, and techniques based in cognitive behavioral therapy and emotional regulation build self-awareness from the inside out. Most importantly, they realize that asking for help is a strength, and healing is possible with the right support system.

How do I know if my teen needs counseling?
Your teen may benefit from counseling if anxiety, sadness, irritability, withdrawal, school stress, trauma, mood changes, or behavior concerns begin affecting daily life. Counseling can help teens process emotions, strengthen coping skills, and communicate more effectively.
What happens in teen counseling?

Does Lifeline Behavioral Health involve parents or families?
Yes. Family involvement is an important part of adolescent counseling when appropriate. Lifeline Behavioral Health supports communication, parenting strategies, family connection, and a stronger support system at home.
What if my teen refuses therapy?
It is common for teens to feel unsure about counseling at first. Parents can start by expressing concern without judgment, asking questions, and explaining that therapy is support, not punishment. Lifeline Behavioral Health can help families explore options when a teen is hesitant.
